One of the most common mistakes I see as a handyman is homeowners ignoring what appears to be a small problem on their roof.
A loose piece of trim.
A small patch of moss.
A little discoloration around a dormer.
It doesn’t seem like much.
Unfortunately, water has a way of turning small problems into expensive repairs.
Recently, I inspected a home where a horizontal trim board above a dormer window had begun to deteriorate. From the ground, it looked like a minor cosmetic issue. However, once moisture enters exposed wood, the damage can spread behind the trim and into the structure.
What could have been addressed quickly may eventually require replacement of trim, sheathing, siding, paint, and sometimes interior repairs.
Warning Signs to Watch For
– Peeling paint
– Soft wood
– Moss growth
– Dark staining
– Gaps in caulking
– Water marks inside the home
My Advice
I often tell homeowners:
“Fix it now for $100, in a few months for $1,000, or in a few years for $10,000.”
Preventive maintenance is almost always less expensive than major repairs.
Final Thoughts
If you notice signs of deterioration on your home’s exterior, don’t wait until the next storm exposes a much bigger problem.
A simple inspection today can save thousands of dollars tomorrow.
